Microsoft Turns to AI to Strengthen Cybersecurity


As technology advances, the tools used to threaten online information are advancing as well. The existence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) gives cybercriminals new ways to search for vulnerabilities and carry out attacks. The good news is that cybersecurity systems are also leveraging AI to identify and address threats at the same speed.

Microsoft is responding to cybersecurity threats with Project Perception, a new cybersecurity system that uses teams of specialized AI agents. Its “red” agents look for possible paths into a system, “blue” agents determine which threats pose a meaningful risk, and “green” agents take corrective action. Microsoft states that while AI will be used, humans will remain in control of critical decisions.

The system also includes MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, Microsoft’s first specialized AI model for analyzing software vulnerabilities. Rather than relying on one model for every task, Project Perception uses smaller, specialized models for routine work and more powerful models for difficult problems. Microsoft says this approach can improve performance while lowering the cost of continuous protection.

Project Perception reflects the changing—and increasing—demands of cybersecurity. As people and businesses entrust more information and activity to digital systems, the protections surrounding these systems must keep pace.

These developments emphasize the importance of avoiding policies that would weaken cybersecurity at any level. Too often, some think that sacrificing cybersecurity is a worthwhile tradeoff as they pursue some (usually spurious) notion of consumer choice or competition. In reality, maintaining strong cybersecurity is a hallmark of the competitive process functioning properly, and private companies should be left free to innovate.
